In 2014, Joomla! surpassed the milestone of 50 million downloads i.e. 11 years after WordPress and it is currently the second most popular CMS globally accounting for more than 6% of Internet Websites and Blogs etc.

Joomla was started on August 17th 2005 when some of the development team felt that Mambo’s non-profit organization established to fund and protect the project from lawsuits failed to meet expectations; a new organization (OpenSourceMatters.org) more suitable to meet such expectations and Joomla! Was born.

Andrew Eddie was appointed as project leader and who played an active role in building a network of thousands of developers within days of his appointment.

The name Joomla! is a phonetic spelling for the Swahili word "Jumla", which means "all together”; it was chosen by the entire development team behind Mambo committed to protecting the interests of the project and community.

With over 8,000 extensions including components, modules, plugins, templates, and language packs and more than a million downloads per month, Joomla attributes its steady growth to a number of factors; to begin with, flexibility and openness of its software enables developers to combine Joomla features with other Open Source Platforms.

Joomla! Has continuous innovations within its six-month release cycle and a growing Developer Community currently accounting of over 600,000 forum members; with more than 3 percent of the Web running on Joomla! (and a CMS Market Share of more than 9 percent), Joomla’s ease-of-use, reliability and extendibility has resulted in Joomla! becoming the second most popular CMS Foundation Platform to date.
